About UFO Parasailing Boats
Soaring into A Green Future!
UFO has recently taken a bold environmental initiative and voluntarily switched its fleet to ultra low sulfur diesel fuel. This move to a more expensive greener fuel will mean a significant reduction in the amount of particulate matter and other pollutants released into the environment by its fleet and comes 5 years ahead of a EPA requirement for marine diesel engines to use ULSDF. Our entire fleet also repowered to Volvo D6 engines which meet or exceed all federal requirements of the EPA.
The Premium 28 Parasail boat has been in active service since 1988. The hull and winch system has gone though many refinements over time to improve the in-service workability of the entire system. The wide chine beam of the Premium 28 Parasail hull carries further forward than similar hulls providing, an extremely stable and comfortable ride in most sea conditions. All deck hardware and fastenings meet commercial workboat standards.
Deck and Hardware Arrangements
The extra large reinforced aft flight deck has been designed with passenger safety in mind. Passengers can be landed on the deck up to 90 degrees off the beam on both port and starboard. All flight deck hardware is flush mounted to prevent accidental snagging of a chute or towlines. A swim platform is installed on every hull as an added safety feature.
The Premium Winch System
The heart of the Premium 28 Parasail is our exclusive Winch System. Continual refinements over the years have made it the most reliable and problem free Winch System on the market meeting or exceeding ABYC and US Coast Guard requirements.
Passenger seating with large storage lockers is located in the forward cockpit. Up to 12 passengers can be accommodated on the Coast Guard Certified version.
Performance and Handling Characteristics
The hull stability in the Premium 28 is especially important in locations that are subject to shifting wind conditions. As the wind clocks, the helmsman’s job of keeping the “flyer” aloft and under control becomes more difficult. If the hull is bouncing around in an active seaway, passenger and crew safety can be compromised. Hull stability is even more important in locations where heavy sea conditions are encountered in and around inlets exposed to the open ocean.
During parasailing flight operations, the Premium 28 Parasail outperforms all other boats in its class. The hull’s high degree of transverse stability helps keep the boat properly trimmed, even in high wind conditions. When the weather picks up, the crew doesn’t have to spend half of their time scrambling for a handhold. A crewman that is trying to work the “flyer” while on their hands and knees is not what we consider a safe operation.
The quality of construction found in our boats speaks for itself. Premium Boat Co. is known throughout the parasailing industry as a quality builder who takes great pride in the finished product. They continuously research the market for new materials and boat building methods to improve the quality of their product.
We have been asked many questions about parasailing in Hawaii over the past 28 years we have been in business. Here are some of the questions we hear the most.
If the line breaks, do we fly into outer space?
No. The line is designed to withstand 10,000 pounds of pressure. The average pull is only 800 pounds.
How do we get into and out of the air?
With the PREMIUM PARASAIL BOAT SYSTEM, the participants are winched on and off the boat hydraulically for safe, dry takeoffs and landings. In the unlikely event of boat malfunction, the parasailors slowly drift down to the water wearing a life jacket.
Do we run on the beach like in Mexico?
No. Here in Hawaii, all parasail takeoffs and landings are hydraulically controlled from the back of the boat.
Do you parasail all year-round?
We parasail seasonally on Maui and are open from May 16th through December 14th.
We operate all year-round in Kona on the Big Island.
Do we have to be able to swim?
No. All takeoffs and landings are done from the back of the boat. In the unlikely event of a mechanical malfunction all participants are required to wear life jackets while parasailing. Anyone can fly.
Do I ever touch the water?
We do dry take-off and landings, however you may get dipped and get your feet wet by your request only. Dipping is at the sole discretion of captain for safety based on wind and sea conditions. The 1200' flight does include an optional simulated free fall where the boat speed is decreased so the participant can experience a parachute descent similar to jumping from a plane but stops short of contact with the water.
Is it very windy when I am flying?
Is it usually remarkably calm and serene and quiet up there and not windy at all. Guests frequently comment on how peaceful it is up there!
That said, there are alternative locations to parasail if the winds are too gusty at the Kaanapali location. Our "go or no go" decision to operate is based solely on safety.
What do you do if you see a whale?
As part of our effort to minimize our operations impact on the seasonal whale migration (Jan- March) we actively avoid whale encounters on our Parasail trips. In the event of a whale initiated close encounter we will follow all protocols provided in the Federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.
What happens if the boat stops suddenly?
In the unlikely event of a mechanical malfunction the participants are gently lowered into the water (lifejackets are mandatory) and retrieved by another vessel in our fleet.
Are there any weight restrictions?
Minimum weight to fly alone is 130 pounds. Maximum weight for tandems or triples is 450 pounds. The captain can increase or decrease these limits at their sole discretion based on safety, wind and sea conditions.
Is there an age requirement?
UFO Parasail has always been proud to be a family oriented activity. Effective May 16, 2011 children have to be at least 3 years old in order to parasail or to ride on the boat as a paying observer.
All minors under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign consent forms at check-in for this activity.
Can people go on the boat and watch?
Yes. The cost for non-flying observers is $35. There is a maximum of 12 passengers per boat including flyers and non-flyers; however, we usually do not exceed 8 for comfort unless requested to accommodate larger groups who want to fly together. Upgrades are available with payment on board should an observer change his/her mind and decide to parasail!
Do you take pictures of our experience?
Yes. We offer a digital package on board. The digital camera is 12 mega pixels utilizing a 300mm zoom lens, we take approximately 25 photos. That service is $35 and you are given the SD card to take with you.
We now offer a YouTube Video package for a Single flight at $35 and for a Tandem/Triple flight for $45! The video of your Maui parasailing adventure will last from 4-6 minutes depending on how many flights in party. It will take up to 5 days for us to edit and upload your video to YouTube. Just go to the UFO Parasail channel and type in your video ticket number under the "search on this channel section" to find your video.
Single Flights - get BOTH for $60 - a $10 Savings! Tandem/Triple Flights - get BOTH for $70 - a $10 Savings!
What should we wear?
We suggest you wear clothes that you are comfortable in at the beach and shoes won't matter because you will leave them on the beach at our umbrella on Maui or on the boat in Kona.
Is there a price difference if one, two, or three people fly together?
Prices are per person whether flying alone, tandem, or triple. The minimum weight to fly alone is 130 pounds. Maximum weight for tandems and triples is 450 pounds. Tandems and triples get more time in the air!
Where do we buy logowear?
We sell logo wear out on the boats and at our Kona office. We offer long sleeve and short sleeve t-shirts, baseball caps and visors, women’s tops and sunglasses holders. Product descriptions and prices are available on board or on the Logo Wear page.
Where do you get your equipment from?
